What is now the role of family in drug prevention? What can and should the family do to protect the child from narcotics? What prevents modern families to be the effective subject of drug prevention? The answers to these problems were obtained during the research that has been carried out on a technique “Rapid Assessment and Response”. Semi-structured interviews of experts in narcology and parents of the drug addicts, structured interviews of parents, and also secondary analysis of data of interrogations of pupils were an empirical base of the research.
The interrogation of the experts and parents of the drug addicts has allowed to identify, what role should play the family in drug prevention. The research has shown that the real role of family essentially differs from ideal. There are characteristic to it: a shortage of attention to children; failing to bring up correctly the independent goal-seeking person appreciating a healthy mode of life; a poor parent control; failing to support the confidence relations with the child; misunderstanding and disrespect of interests of the child; poor parents’ knowledge of drugs; parents’ staying mistaken concerning danger of drug addiction of the child, concerning his (her) behaviour and relations with the parents.
The outcomes of research help to determine directions of the informational and educational work with the parents in drug prevention.
